The International Women's Day which is observed on the 8th of March every year is a global day celebrating the success and achievements of women in different spheres of life. It is 2021, and women across the globe deserve an environment full of peace with equal rights and opportunities. During the past few years, we have seen the tables turning regarding people's point of view towards women and valuing their massive contribution to the lives of their family as well as the country. Today we can see progress in society to help advance women in various fields. Yet, women have to face many challenges in society and it will take another century to celebrate true diversity and making gender equality a reality.

Gender Inequality

A woman is said to be the representation of love, versatility, strength, and beauty. In spite of the fact that her existence should be praised every day yet, we have International Women's Day dedicated to her to mark her contributions. This day is also acknowledged to make everyone aware of women's rights and gender equality. It has always been observed that males have had more advantages in comparison to females in every sphere of life. But this needs to be changed as every human being should be treated equally with equal rights and opportunities.

Women in India as well as many countries are not treated equally in terms of education, health, social status, opportunities, and legal rights. Many people still believe that educating a girl is not necessary and families refrain from investing financially in the education of girls. There are many barriers a girl has to face in terms of education like poverty, child marriage and early pregnancy, violence, etc.

At Workplaces also, the majority of women face discrimination in India as they miss out on a raise, promotion, or other work offers. Women who have the flexibility of working from home, face barriers including lack of time and discrimination for family care. In many places, women have to face workplace discrimination because of household responsibilities, and family responsibilities also come in the way of their careers.

International Women's Day Theme 2021

This year the theme of International Women's Day 2021 is 'Choose To Challenge' which signifies that a challenged world is an alert world and from challenge comes the change. Women across the world are responsible for their own thoughts and actions and they challenge the world every day. The theme further states that women should challenge gender biases and inequality globally. An essential change is required to celebrate equality with diversity.

History of International Women's Day

Women's Day is celebrated every year on March 8. On this date, in 1917, women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia. This day used to be celebrated by the communist countries and socialists movement. But later in 1977 United Nations observed the day and began celebrating this day as International Women's Day.
