• The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has asked the Somali government to immediately organize elections in the country on March 12, 2021. The UN Security Council made this request in a resolution that emphasized the urgent threat to Somalia’s security from Al-Shabaab and armed opposition groups. The adopted UN Security Council resolution authorized the African Union to maintain a strong force of approximately 20,000 people in Somalia until the end of 2020.

• The Uttar Pradesh government will organize a three-day “Kalanamak Rice Festival” in the Siddharth Nagar area of Uttar Pradesh. The festival will start on March 13, 2021. The music festival was organized after the success of the “Jansi Strawberry Festival” and “Lucknow Jaggery Festival”.

• Celebrate International River Action Day on March 14 to raise awareness of the importance of rivers and climate change. On this day, communities and individuals around the world work together to express their opposition to destructive water development projects, health and sustainable management of watersheds. The day was earlier known as “International Dam Day” to commemorate rivers, water and life.

• The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has launched a sounding rocket named RH-560 on March 12, 2021. The purpose of launching the rocket is to study the “vertical changes” in the dynamics of neutral wind and plasma. The RH-560 rocket was launched from the Sriharikota Range (SHAR) of the Satish Dhawan Space Center (SDSC). ISRO emphasized that the sounding rocket is a one-stage or two-stage solid propellant rocket.

• The National Academy of Letters announced the name of the “2020 Sahitaya Akademi Award” on March 12, 2021. These names were announced during the opening of the annual “Literature Festival” event. The award will be awarded to politician writer M Veerappa Moily, poet Arundhathi Subramaniam and 20 other writers. Subramaniam’s collection of poems “When God is a Traveler” won the grand prize in English.

• The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has written to the Chief Secretaries of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh to take appropriate actions in accordance with the law to check the illegal inflows from Myanmar into India. The MHA directive was issued when a military coup and subsequent Myanmar crackdown led to several people crossing the border into India.

• Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue) the first ever leadership summit. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison attended the virtual Summit. At the virtual summit, QUAD leaders emphasized the cooperation between member countries, aiming to defeat the global pandemic through a joint vaccine partnership.

• The opening ceremony of the 27th “Hunar Haat” was held in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. This is the 27th Haat organized by the Ministry of Minority Affairs and attracted more than 600 artists. The Hunar Haats has become a “Mega Mission” of indigenous handicrafts, cuisine and culture, as well as economic empowerment of master craftsmen and handicraftsmen.

• Union Minister of Jal Shakti reviewed the progress made during Jal Jeevan’s mission with all State/UTs Water Resources Ministers. Jal Jeevan Mission is a flagship program of the Union government that aims to provide every rural household with a tap water connection by 2024. The 2021 Union Budget will increase the allocation of funds for missions from Rs 11,500 crore in 2020-21 to Rs 500,110 crore in 2021-22.
